Analyst Believes Apple Will Unveil Netbooks at Macworld

Written by Arn from Macrumors.com

Computerworld reports on an analyst Ezra Gottheil of Technology Business Research Inc. who believes that Apple will could introduce two new netbook models at Macworld San Francisco.

While an intriguing possibility, Gottheil admits this is not based on any inside information:

“I don’t have any inside information,” said Ezra Gottheil of Technology Business Research Inc., as he spelled out his take on Apple’s next hardware move. “This is just by triangulation.”

Instead, Gottheil simply believes this based on the increasing popularity of netbooks and increasing financial pressures on Apple due to the recession. He goes on to describe how instead of a stripped down MacBook, Apple may choose to pursue a model similar to the iPhone — a closed system in which software is delivered through the App Store.

That’s why he believes Apple will introduce netbooks next year that, like the company’s iPhone, will exist in an Apple-controlled “closed system” where software is delivered via the App Store, device restore is done from iTunes, backup is available through an optional online service, most likely MobileMe, and peripheral and add-on choices will be limited.

Macworld kicks off on January 5th, 2009

Lobsters, Maine Economy and Stuff

Category: Generalllabree @ 10:58 am

I thought this was an interesting article, for a couple reasons.  One, it talks about the hard times Maine Lobstermen are facing.  Two, it takes quotes from people I know and work with; our firm is behind www.LobsterCelebrations.com.  ThreeClick Here.

Mainers find clever ways to hawk lobster

Times are tough for our many-legged ocean-dwelling friends, Homarus americanus — the American lobster. But times are even tougher for our two-legged, dock-dwelling friends, Traphaulinus mainerus — the Maine lobsterman. Increased fuel and bait prices, decreased consumer demand in the wake of the sinking economy, and tougher regulations have meant that lobstermen from Cape Elizabeth to Castine have seen their income shrink.

But we’re Mainers, and we stick together to help our own — which is why some enterprising individuals around the state have come up with some new ways to market the beloved crustacean.

Lobster Celebrations (www.lobstercelebrations.com) is the brainchild of Cary Weston, co-founder of Bangor-based marketing and public relations firm Sutherland and Weston. A conversation with a friend from Washington County got him to thinking about ways individual people could help out the lobster industry. The idea of buying lobster for birthday parties, anniversaries or even Thanksgiving dinner seemed like a simple way that one person could make a difference.

“We’ve gotten a lot of feedback about the site,” said Weston. “And even if you don’t want to push aside other foods for holiday meals in favor of lobster, we offer recipes on the site that use lobster to complement turkey, or blueberries, or potatoes, or other Maine foods.”

Lobster Celebrations has instigated a minor Internet craze, with Facebook pages attracting multiple views, and the story being picked up nationally by CNN and Fox. Similarly to Weston’s idea, organizations such as the Southwest Harbor Chamber of Commerce have encouraged local restaurants and cafes to offer menu items featuring lobster for the month of October.

For Weston, who started Lobster Celebrations, the iconic sea creature is more than just a means of livelihood for coastal Mainers — it’s a source of Maine identity.

“I think people feel a real sense of pride and ownership, when it comes to Maine lobsters,” he said. “I think people are very proud of what the industry has meant to this state, and that we’re so associated with it.”

River of Rocks

Category: Generalllabree @ 11:35 pm

NOW THIS IS A MUDSLIDE!

After watching the video that I put in the previous post I went to YouTube and looked for more landslide video… I saw this.

This is AWESOME.  At it’s peak this thing was pushing rocks the size of cars shooting down a mountain side.  It’s cool that the footage starts as it’s first coming down.

In the other landslide you’d stand a fighting chance.  This one… gruesome death.

A big mudslide/debris flow that happened in North-East Afghanistan. Region (Province) is Badakshan, district of Varduj. Happened in June after heavy rains and snow melts.

Superfast Mudlandslide

Category: Generalllabree @ 10:59 pm

Check out first thirteen seconds of this video.  The speed an power of it, how quickly a huge mass of dirt, rocks and trees moves and then suddenly stops.  If you were in front of it, you’d have to start running the instant it let go.  If you got caught in and you likely be crushed or suffocated or buried.  Watch the beginning part a few times.
